About the Department
The City of Punta Gorda Fire Department is an efficient and professional fire/rescue service. We are dedicated to be a community-oriented department that provides a broad spectrum of public services. Our agency strives to meet the challenges presented by the public needs and demands for a progressive and high quality fire department. The function of the fire department is to protect lives and property through fire prevention, medical life support, fire suppression, hazardous materials response/identification, water rescue, and other emergency incidents during both natural and man-made emergencies in the most effective, professional and efficient manner possible. The City Fire Department has grown over the last 108 years from an all volunteer department to a combination department with three stations and twenty-four paid Firefighter/EMT's manning the stations twenty-four hours a day with three eight man shifts. The department has also kept the Punta Gorda Volunteer Fire Association active with approximately twelve volunteer firefighters. The Fire Suppression Division personnel are highly trained in the latest methods of medical life support, fire suppression, hazardous materials response/identification, public safety/rescue diving, vehicular extrication, and other rescue situations. They are also involved with the prevention aspect of the fire department operations through pre-fire planning of commercial and multi-family occupancies and the annual in-service inspection program. Personnel also conduct additional programs including fire/CO detectors, senior and children fire safety, blood pressure checks, fire extinguisher education, home safety checks, etc. The Fire Prevention Division is tasked with the responsibility of keeping the citizens of Punta Gorda and their property safe from fire and other life threatening incidents. They accomplish this by staying current with the Local, State and Federal codes, rules, ordinances, etc. relating to life safety and building construction. The Fire Prevention Division is also responsible for reviewing all commercial and multi-family construction plans prior to awarding of a building permit. Punta Gorda Fire Department |
