Wastewater Treatment Plant
The Wastewater Treatment division operates and maintains the Punta Gorda Wastewater Treatment Plant, a 4.0 MGD (Million Gallon per Day) plant. The division also operates and maintains the Master and Booster Pumping Stations. Wastewater residuals are beneficially reclaimed by land application to on-site agriculture fields. The treated water is discharged to an effluent disposal deep injection well. This division also includes the City’s Fleet maintenance operations.
The division is comprised of 17 employees separated into 3 work teams: Operations, Maintenance, and Fleet Maintenance. The Operations team consists of 7 state licensed operators, whose task it is to monitor and control the plant processes to ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations. The Maintenance team has 5 members and 1 maintenance chief. Their goals include administering the preventative maintenance program, repairing process equipment, responding to after hour’s emergency calls, and maintaining the 884 acre site. Fleet maintenance includes 3 mechanics and 1 secretary; they service and maintain the vehicles and equipment used by the utilities department as well as equipment used by various other city departments.
Annual Accomplishments
The primary goal of the Wastewater division is to protect public health and enhance the environment, by ensuring the responsible treatment and beneficial disposal of domestic waste. This is accomplished by treating an average of 625 million gallons of wastewater, and reclaiming 310 dry tons of residuals a year. The division has implemented better methods of data collection and recording that has helped to increase the efficiency of key parts of the treatment process. They have a comprehensive preventative maintenance program, which helps to address issues before they result in equipment failure. Annually one hundred acres of Japanese Millet is planted and maintained for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission to conduct their annual dove hunting operation on site. We continuously work to insure all permit requirements utilizing Deep Well effluent disposal have been met. And we plan, design, and build necessary upgrades, expansions, and improvements to the facilities to continue compliance with all State and Federal regulatory requirements required in the future.
Fleet Maintenance
The Fleet Maintenance Division operates and maintains all vehicles and equipment used in the Utilities department, as well as maintaining a fleet of cars, trucks and other light equipment specifically for Public Works. To accomplish this they provide the following services: routine services on engine, driveline, brakes, electrical and hydraulics. This is accomplished by maintaining a comprehensive preventative maintenance program, detailed record keeping, emergency response service, and coordination of repairs with outside vendors. Besides maintaining the City’s Utilities and Public Works fleet, they also provide services for general welding, repair and fabrication, pump repairs and rebuilds, as well as assisting in the maintenance of much of Utilities’ large process equipment. Fleet also assists in preparation of vehicle specifications, assists Procurement with contract specifications for vehicles, parts, and repair services. Fleet makes a conscious effort to conserve and protect our environment by ensuring all local, state and federal guidelines are followed.
