The Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) is a federally funded program administered by the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The CDBG program allows local governments to improve housing conditions, infrastructure, and expand economic opportunities for low-income people. The City of Punta Gorda receives funding on an annual basis as an entitlement community and first received funding in 1994. The dollars are used to fund various non-profit organizations that provide services to the community. They are also used for sidewalk, street tree and street lighting projects to improve neighborhood stability and quality of life.
