Here in Punta Gorda, we cherish our beautiful weather and lush landscapes. However, our sunny days and seasonal dry spells mean we all share a responsibility to keep our community safe from brush fires and wildfires.

By taking a few proactive steps in our own backyards and staying informed about local regulations, we can protect our homes, our neighbors, and the historic charm of our City.

Understanding Burn Bans

During dry seasons, the City or County may issue a burn ban. This isn't just a suggestion, it is a critical safety measure put in place when vegetation is dry and wind conditions make fire difficult to control. During burn bans, certain precautions should be followed:

  • No open campfires or bonfires
  • No burning yard waste
  • Use caution when grilling

Curious about the current conditions in the City? The National Integrated Drought Information System has interactive maps of current conditions available.

To find out if a burn ban is currently in place, check the City Fire Department's Facebook page.

Creating a Defensible Space Around Your Home

You don't need to be a firefighter to protect your home. "Defensible space" simply means creating a buffer between your house and the grass, trees, or shrubs that surround it. This slows the spread of fire and gives emergency responders a safe area to work. Below are some simple maintenance tips for homeowners:

  • Clear the Gutters
dried leaves and pine needles are highly flammable. Keep them swept clear, especially during dry season.
  • Lean and Green Zone
Keep plants within 5 feet of your home well-watered and pruned. Consider using firewise plants for your landscaping.
  • Mind the Trees
Trim tree branches so they are at least 10 feet from your roof or chimney.
  • Tidy Up Vegetation
Remove dead palm fronds and dry undergrowth. If you have palmettos, thin them out as they burn very hot and fast.
  • Lawn Care
Keep your lawn mowed and watered. Dry, tall grass acts as a fuse for wildfires.

Community Safety

Fire safety is a team effort. A well-maintained property protects not just your home, but your neighbor's home as well. Other important ways to keep our community safe include:

  • Proper Cigarette Disposal
Always dispose of cigarettes in a proper receptacle. Improperly disposed cigarettes were responsible for 1,700 wildfires in the United States between 2010 and 2020.
  • Safe Vehicle Practices
Avoid driving or parking cars on dry grass; hot exhaust pipes can ignite a fire.
  • Report Smoke Immediately
If you see smoke or a fire getting out of control, call 911 immediately.
