The City of Punta Gorda's first annual Citizen Summit was held March 24, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Punta Gorda Isles Civic Association. The event was an opportunity for staff to share information on upcoming projects and issues and for residents to provide feedback to staff for the City Strategic Plan update.

Information was provided and questions and feedback were received at department booths. Commonly asked questions were also used as talking points, and those questions and their answers can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section to the right.

Four breakout presentations provided an opportunity for residents to hear more in-depth information on the City's utilities infrastructure from Utilities Director Tom Spencer, the City's website from IT Systems Analyst Alicia Oates, property taxes from Finance Director Kristin Simeone, and Public Works operations from Public Works Director Ron Everts. Videos of their presentations are available on the City's YouTube channel.

FAQs

Did you know all electors of the City can vote for all City Council candidates, regardless of their Council district?

Elections for City Council Districts 3 and 5 take place in odd years while elections for City Council Districts 1, 2, and 4 take place in even years. As long as you are a registered voter of the City, you can vote in any of the City elections held each year.

Unlike elections which are open to all registered voters of the City, the qualifying process does include a restriction on who can sign a candidate's petition per the City Charter. Qualifying petitions may only be signed by registered voters who reside in the same City Council district that the candidate seeks election to. An interactive map available on the City's website can be used to determine if you can sign the petition for a City Council candidate.
Did you know businesses run from a resident's home require a City business tax receipt and an affidavit?

All business which operate from a location within the City limits require a business tax receipt. Those which operate from a home also require an affidavit declaring the business meets certain requirements for a limited home occupation. If the business proprietor is also the owner of the home, the Affidavit for Limited Home Occupation should be completed by the applicant. If the business proprietor is not the owner of the home, the Property Owner Affidavit for Limited Home Occupation should be completed by the property owner.
Did you know Human Resources is involved in the City's response to hurricanes and other catastrophic events?

Human Resources interfaces with insurance companies, inspects City facilities, and works to reopen the City as soon as possible for business. Human Resources also connects with City employees and provide helpful resources to meet their personal needs following catastrophic events.
Did you know Human Resources performs additional functions?

The City's Human Resources Department also oversees risk management and safety.
Did you know it is normal for a swale to hold water for up to 72 hours?

Roadside swales are shallow grassy areas intended to convey excess stormwater to the nearest body of water. Besides conveying water, swales also filter and absorb water, resulting in cleaner canals and aquifers. It is normal for swales to hold water for up to 72 hours after a rain event as a part of this process. During the rainy season, it is not uncommon for swales to be wet for weeks at a time. Did you know new commercial development has to provide stormwater data showing they are not increasing the stormwater runoff from the property?

New commercial developments must provide stormwater runoff calculations during the permit review process. As part of the requirements, the new commercial development stormwater data must show that the project’s post-development (after) stormwater runoff calculations must not exceed the project’s pre-development (before) stormwater runoff calculations.
